No amendments needed for special syariah courts set-up

KUALA LUMPUR: The setting-up of special courts for marriage, hadhanah (child custody) and nafkah (maintenance) under the purview of the Kuala Lumpur Syariah Court will not involve any amendment to the existing laws, says Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom.

The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department said this is because it only requires specialised judges and courtrooms.

“The setting-up of the special courts may sound odd in the ­syariah sector, but it is common in the civil court system, such as the Special Court for Sexual Crimes Against Children.
